Abstract:
Rice production and farmers’ livelihoods are at risk because of several factors. This study was conducted to
determine the risk management practices of the farmers encountered in rice production at the Municipality of
Katipunan Zamboanga Del Norte. The study used a descriptive research design using a structured questionnaire
as data gathering instrument. Purposive sampling method was used in selecting the one hundred twenty (120)
respondents from the list of registered rice farmers outsourced from the office of the municipal agriculturist.
The data gathered was statistically interpreted using frequency count and percentage. In this study, the
researchers concluded that rice production is a complex system subject to various risks. In production risk,
rice farmers were more exposed to the risk associated with the high cost of inputs in chemicals, high
transportation cost is the most significant problem that the farmers are facing in marketing risk, lack of sources
of capital in terms of the financial risk while insufficient manual labor in human risk. It is recommended that
educational institutions, like Jose Rizal Memorial State University, and, in coordination with the Local
Government Unit and other relevant government agencies, should conduct an extension program with a focus
in providing opportunities for continued learning and develop new skills through the following risk management
strategies: Integrated Pest Management (IPM), organic farming, and crop insurance. They should also be trained
on the usage of different modern risk management techniques like insurance, integrated farming, and
cooperative marketing.
